Most of us use technology in many ways every day. While we all find it handy, there are some areas of the United States where technology has completely reshaped the economy. In addition to well-known tech areas like Silicon Valley and Seattle, there are plenty of smaller urban areas who have gotten a tech boost. Here are four cities who are enjoying the tech renaissance:
Silicon Slopes, UT
Named Silicon Slopes by Josh James, this area includes Salt Lake City, Utah, and the smaller communities surrounding it, like Provo and Park City. Many tech companies are choosing this area because of the outstanding way of life and the fact that Salt Lake City is reachable from many points in the United States with just a short airplane flight. It is easy to find qualified people in Utah.
The Research Triangle
Consisting of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill in North Carolina, the Research Triangle got its start in the 1960s. Over 200 companies are located in The Research Triangle with many developing new ideas every day. The city of Durham has American Tobacco Campus where over 222 startups are located while Raleigh’s Warehouse District also has many tech startups. Even Google has an important presence in this region with an outpost in Chapel Hill.
Many high-tech companies are loving Texas and the surrounding Hill Country. The city has a unique “Keep Austin Weird” vibe that many in the tech community love. While on the rise, the cost of living here is still reasonable. Techstar Austin Incubator has had many success stories in bringing startups and investors together. Austin startups like CyberDefenses are also leading the world in keeping technology users safe from hackers.
Knoxville and its surrounding suburbs have been staples of business for decades, so it should come as no surprise that technology companies are loving this city. The nearby presence of Oak Ridge National Laboratory means that many of those tech companies are focused on innovative energy solutions. The Y-12 National Security Complex helps to make sure that our energy supply is protected. The University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the Electric Power Research Institute are helping to bring together academia and businesses large and small.
These areas are doing important work in helping to shape everyone’s future. If you are looking to get involved with life-changing technology, then you might want to consider moving to one of these areas where you can join an existing company or start one of your own.
Not only is technology developing cities around America, but it is also benefiting education. Here are the reasons why learning technology is the answer to fixing education.
